TWO MEN ARRESTED FOR ILLEGALLY CARRYING 7 KG OF URANIUM IN MAHARASHTRA

ACCUSED TESTED URANIUM'S QUALITY

ATS believed the accused got the Uranium in their possession tested from a private laboratory in Mumbai to check its purity. The seized Uranium was later sent to BARC at Trombay for further examination, the report obtained from BARC suggested that the aluable substance was natural uranium which was highly exploe and dangerous.


THE ARREST

The two accused have been identified as Jigar Pandya and Abu Tahir Hussain Choudhary and were carrying 7kgs of Uranium which is considered a very rare and dangerous element, generally used for making nuclear explosives. Maharashtra's Anti-Terrorism Squad recieved private information about the accused looking for a potential buyer to sell the huge quantity of uranium. Upon receiving the information, Nagpada unit of ATS subsequently arrested Jigar Pandya with small amounts of Uranium on 14th of February this year. However, Choudhary was arrested from Kurla Scrap Association in Mankhurd having in possession 7 kgs of pure Uranium which was seized by the squad upon his arrest.


FURTHER INVESTIGATION

The ATS registered a case against the accused under the Atomic Energy Act-1962. They were further produced before a local court which detained them in the custody of ATS till May 12. As of now the accused are still in ATS custody being interrogated by them. The ATS said the officials are questioning the accused to trace further links and to learn of how they procured the substance in such heavy amounts.
