“We were only there to work it felt like we were in jail”

Laboni (A victim of modern day slavery)

The modern world is progressing very fast by the virtue of a lot of changes or actions that are being done and taken daily, but it’s somehow very strange that slavery still exists in the era. Studies suggest 1 in every 200 people are exposed to slavery in some way or another.

“Modern Slavery”

Remember reading about the existence of modern slavery back in the 1800’s? You’ll be surprised to know this still exists in today’s era. Shocking, isn’t it? We’ve progressed unboundelessly, and yet, 2 centuries in the future; this problem still exists.

One can explain modern slavery as the exploitation of poor and backward people who are being enslaved unknowingly for personal or commercial gains. An important cause to this issue is the luring and promising people steady job, but in reality, subjecting them towards harsh and inhumane living and working conditions.

We believe that freedom is for everybody and we assume that everyone around us is also free and can live their life to their fullest extent but the harsh reality is some people don’t visualise freedom like we do.

There are millions whose lives have become miserable in illusion of a good living and just want to live a life just like us but they can do nothing about it because if they raise their voices up they will end with death and many other brutal tortures.

This form of slavery is around us everywhere and yet, we have no idea about its existence. Three of its most prominent forms include

  • Human Trafficking : People are exposed to unfilthy circumstances and get involved in prostitution, bondage labour, criminality, marriage and even organ removal, all by means of extreme violence and threats.

  • Debt bondage/bonded labour : The most widespread form of slavery, those people are forced to take debts and later get trapped in debts and are forced to work to pay off the debts and lose control of their employment conditions.

  • Forced and early marriage : Marriage against will at a very young age, these children are forced to marry people who are twice or thrice their age and suffer from intense domestic violence and are forced to normalise such horrific happenings by means of brutal torture.

Where is the actual fault for all these happenings?

Modern slavery is not just localised in some countries or state in fact this it is arising as a global problem, If we dive deeper we’ll actually see that the migrants often get trapped in criminal charges but in fact they are the victims of force, misery, agony, and grief. These things have been normalised because there is someone else over them who is most likely to treat them in such a way that they can’t stop themselves doing such works, while most of the Govts. claim and make promises to eradicate this existential crisis, they do nothing about this.

CONCLUSION

All we see is a blame game and they tend to point out the criminals who are associated in these sort of works but somehow if we look deeply there is a system error. The immigration laws aren’t so worthy or fit to eradicate all these wrong happenings and somehow in the end the innocent is being criminalized and the actual criminals are free.
