Most of us may be unaware of the fact that Akhil Gogoi is a former M.L.A of Assam's Sivasagar, he was charged for his role in anti- CAA protests in Assam and also was charged under UAPA for which he was in jail since December 2020. The question we ask. today that UAPA a way to silence IS the protestors? Is it a way to cage Political Prisoners?

LABELLED TERORRIST FOR PROTESTING

His speech at an anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) rally in Assam's Chabua in 2019, may have been a sharp political statement, but it was not an offence under the Unlawful activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), a special National Investigation Agency (NIA) cOurt said while discharging the Gogoi of criminal charges.

On the 1st July, Gogoi walked out of the jail as the NIA (National Investigation Agency) Court acquitted him from all the charges for his last pending case under UAPA (Unlawful Activities Prevention Act).

IMPORTANT

The case was related to anti- CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) protest in the state which later turned out to be very violent and impleasant. Gogoi and his associates were charged with criminal conspiracy, sedition, promoting enmity between the different religiOus groups, linguistic groups, race, and assertions against the national integrity and also the indulgence with the terrorist groups having maoist links. Gogoi is even scheduled to visit the home of the 17 year old student Sam Stafford who died in the police firing during the protest.
